We wanted to make the most of the exceptional location to design a building open to the exterior. From level one to the top floor, wide terraces give each apartment a broad running outdoor complement. The composition ascends in successive volumes, each level adding external areas that run on into shared parts. At ground level, the concept takes advantage of a constraint in urban regulations that stipulated the need for a spacious pedestrian passage running from the street to the park, since one of the open flights of stairs gives on to this passage. The itinerary from public space to apartment is thus all external, residents negotiate stairs and footbridge landings to get to their front doors. This creates the impression of living in a free-standing house, surrounded by approach terraces. To play up the project’s exceptional location at the entrance to a city park, façades are printed with a stylized leaf motif that remains discreet while adding a precious note. This pattern runs over most of the elevations, in some places irregularly, and suggests the movement of a climbing plant. - [Solaris Housing Block](https://manuelle-gautrand.com/projects/residential/solaris-housing-block): Housing block of 100 apartments & socio-cultural center in Rennes Although this program concerns social housing and facilities in the north-eastern suburbs of Rennes – 100 flats plus a community and sports center for neighborhood associations – the goal was to implement high quality environment solutions. The site plan shows three separate buildings set north-south and interconnected at ground level by the community and sports center, which lies perpendicular to them. The elevations of the blocks of flats differ depending on the direction they face: few openings to the north, where the bedrooms are; a lot to the south, for the benefit of day- and living-room spaces. The south front also features cantilevered loggias, which in winter pre-heat the air around living rooms. They are glazed like winter gardens, and besides improving comfort they add extra floor-space.Their glazed partitions can slide wide open in summer. - [R.T.E. Both the developer and the municipality wanted a blend of architectural designs and programs, composed by five different architects, each team handling one part of the whole. Given the desired high density, the first objective was to imagine a site plan that would federate the urban and architectural issues in a coherent set endowed with strong visual identity. Once this overall volume was defined, each architect would be free to exercise his or her personal creativity on one of its ‘slices’. Our particular ‘slice’ – the centerpiece – contains offices in a hollowed-out volume designed as a huge cantilever over an interior street. The opening faces a large park central to the site, as if to breathe it in. All the elevations and even the underside are clad in sheets of shiny steel, the uppermost shaped in scrolls that call to mind flowers, a reminder of the park to which they open. The mirror surfaces reflect the surroundings and animate them, conferring a weightless feel on the overhang, which vanishes amidst reflexions and kaleidoscopic patterns, and adding a touch of fantasy to a rigorous architectural set. - [Cite Des Affaires](https://manuelle-gautrand.com/projects/work/cite-des-affaires): Office Building in Saint-Etienne Photography by Vincent Fillon (c) and Philippe Ruault (c) Our proposal for this business center, which groups various public services, reflects the changes that have taken place in Saint-Etienne, once one of the big manufacturing towns of the French heartland. The site is near the main train station, in an area slated for redevelopment that will bring increased density in land use. To prepare the way for things to come, we had the idea of creating a continuous set of volumes developing one after the other: set on the ground here, rising up there, animating the site in large portals and overhangs. Continuity in the volume pattern enables excellent flexibility: depending on their needs, users will have the possibility of extending or reducing the floor-space they occupy. The ‘Aztec serpent’ look of the set expresses vertical and horizontal movement: top to bottom and vice versa, touching the ground and opening large access and exit ways. The three gigantic entrance portals are set in a staggered layout, opening sight-lines and pedestrian passages on all sides. The volumes are glazed on three of their faces, while the fourth is yellow. This color code serves a definite purpose: the yellow face brings light into the core of the block and underscores the overall folding pattern. - [Origami Building](https://manuelle-gautrand.com/projects/work/origami-building-paris): Barclays headquarters building, avenue de Friedland in Paris 8 This office block stands on avenue Friedland, a few hundred yards from the arc de Triomphe. The brief called for an upgrade in two parts: the main building on a 20 meter-wide strip on the avenue, and an extension in the rear, between two courtyard gardens. At ground floor level, the lobby plays on transparency between the street front and the main garden. The building in the rear of the lot is more private, and it is there that the cafeteria and meeting rooms are laid out, with garden space on both sides. On the avenue façade, the architects imagined dressing out the windows with an origami arrangement of marble panels, to express elegance and modernity. The panels are composite, a film of marble mounted on a twin layer of glass. This second skin is translucent and acts as a breast wall to ensure privacy as well as filter daylight, creating a soft interior atmosphere. Marble folds create a vibration along the 30 meter-long front. At both ends, in continuity with the façades of neighboring buildings, the origami becomes calmer and flattens out. But in the central part it forms a delicate bas-relief. - [University](https://manuelle-gautrand.com/projects/work/university): La maison du nombre - institute of mathematical sciences in Luxemburg - [10.4b Office Building](https://manuelle-gautrand.com/projects/work/10-4b-mixed-use-building): Office building in Euralille - [University](https://manuelle-gautrand.com/projects/work/university-2): Professional academic institute in Lieusaint This building is a very minimalist and very simple project for University. It includes classroom and an amphitheater and a library for students. The building had to be very flexible, to be prepared in case of changes. So the project is divided in two parts: On one side is a concrete block, with all the classrooms, and on the other a toughened glass (it’s name is reglit) cube for the amphitheater and the library. The toughened glass is used either alone, as a double glazing, or as a single glazing facing to the concrete structure or the insulation, to produce a seeminghty lightweight, unified, textured and nuanced elevation. The real transparency of the spandrels and of the double glazing (Reglit) is coupled with the illusory transparency of the single glazing over the concrete or riveted insulation. This insulation is a silver-plated insulation, which is shining a lot behind the toughened glass. The inside is all in white, except the title of the classrooms, with their numbers and codes, and except in the main-hall a lot of colored bubbles painted on the stain wall. So the inside have a lot of brightness and legibility. The classrooms on the north-side have very large windows which are opened on a beautiful and old line of trees. - [A12 Warehouse](https://manuelle-gautrand.com/projects/work/a12-warehouse): Logistic warehouse in the harbour of Gennevilliers Problems of scale and massiveness inherent to the design of large sheds were solved in this project by marking a clear break on all the elevations. The overall height of 12,5 m is divided up in two parts: a base wall 5,8 m high in polished dark grey concrete, fit to resist wear and tear, and a translucent upper part. The idea is to bring in as much daylight as possible to a space that may one day house workshops or  production lines. The translucent upper shell is made of cellular polycarbonate sheet, laid in five layers – 16 mm thick all told. By day it brings in abundant light and reflects sky colors; by night, it lights up from within like a lantern. With its rippling surface and shiny scales, the roof forms a fifth façade visible from the heights around the river-bend. It floats like a cloth of luminous prisms stretched 12 meters above the work spaces, providing a wealth of changing lights. The principle of the roof frame is simplicity itself and reinterprets well-known industrial types. - [Toll Booth](https://manuelle-gautrand.com/projects/work/toll-booth-2): 5 toll stations + restroom facilities on A16 motorway Most motorway tool booth are built with little regard for their context. But in this project, we try to create a definite relationship with it, and even to integrate the utility structure to surrounding landscape. The fine old Gothic cathedrals in this part of Northern France – and their stained glass windows – provided inspiration. A wing-like canopy of laminated glass stretches over the five tollbooths, reasserting their unity and joining the two edges of the landscape cut by the traffic lanes. As motorists pass beneath it, they discover its underside covered with pictures of natural scenery, forming huge technicolor screens. The effect is like being inside a Gothic cathedral, the bearing structure for the glass surfaces being outside. The silk-screen imagery on the canopy is typical of the Abbeville region: fields of wheat, yellow colza and red poppies, woodland, seascapes. Control service annexes are smothered in greenery and show only one face on the motorway. Toilets are located in small round red and blue pop-style cubicles. The junior high school occupies a very large site, which allowed us to build five villas for the staff of the school and, on top of that, numerous leisure or sports spaces. Two separate facilities have been built, thanks the available area: one being dedicated to the class rooms and the other one to the additional study or leisure services. This second part is the real heart of the project, where all the services have been designed as small independent and play volumes, under a huge protective roof. These volumes, dispatched on two levels, include the auditorium, the dining hall, the multimedia library, the study hall, and so on. All of them have been inspired by a organic design, completely covered by a wood structure and open with the large glazed nave. The constant light from the exterior makes the yellow ground shine. In the end, this area is more than just a simple ‘services area’, it is a real ‘meeting area’, a playground, a very friendly and welcoming place. The volume of the classrooms, perpendicular to this first volume described above, has a bitter design, favorable to their lengthwise development. The school houses also hosts a beautiful green terrace area, going down to the hall, like a outdoor theater. - [Airport Warehouse](https://manuelle-gautrand.com/projects/work/airport-warehouse): Airport warehouse on Nantes-Atlantique airport This airport warehouse is owned by the local Chamber of Commerce and is now being used by various services. It has two parts: storage space and offices. The storage space is subdivided into three sections: one storeroom for fragile or dangerous substances, a second for semi-fragile stuff, laid out in the form of laboratories separated from the rest, and a third for heavy matter. The building operates on a 24-hour basis, which is why the architects chose to use polycarbonate, a translucent material capable of transforming the built volume into a luminous mass, making it instantly identifiable even at night-time. Light reflecting from or filtering through walls marked by an exo-structure transforms this high-tech receptacle into a magic object that shines by day and by night, a ‘luminous box’ in the middle of the airport. The roof is designed to shelter the building from harsh sunlight and prevent its night-time luminosity from interfering with ground control signals for air traffic. - [Spille Boutique Hotel](https://manuelle-gautrand.com/projects/hospitality/spille-boutique-hotel): 4* Hotel 70 rooms + restaurant + pool + spa With Commonsens Studio, Architects (Tirana) - [Hotel MGalery Valence](https://manuelle-gautrand.com/projects/hospitality/mgalery-valence): 4* Hotel 70 rooms + restaurant + pool - [Marievik M27& M30 Blocks](https://manuelle-gautrand.com/projects/hospitality/marievik-m27-m30-blocks): Offices, hotel, café, shops, facilities In association with BSK Arkitekter – Stockholm - [Marriott Hotels](https://manuelle-gautrand.com/projects/hospitality/marriott-hotels): One RESIDENCE INN Hotel, and one COURTYARD Hotel, facilities, restaurant in Roissy Airport. - [The Belaroia Montpellier](https://manuelle-gautrand.com/projects/hospitality/mixed-use-building): 4* hotel, 3* hotel, housing & retail building - [W Hotel](https://manuelle-gautrand.com/projects/hospitality/w-hotel): Refurbishment and extension of the W Hotel (5*) in Paris - Opera Garnier District - [Residence Hotel Hipark](https://manuelle-gautrand.com/projects/hospitality/indochine-hotel): Hotel Residence Hipark Paris La Villette - 125 rooms - [Nice By Versace](https://manuelle-gautrand.com/projects/hospitality/nice-by-versace): BOUTIQUE HOTEL FURNISHED BY VERSACE & RESTAURANT - [Mero Beach Resort](https://manuelle-gautrand.com/projects/hospitality/mero-beach-resort): 20 private luxury villas resort on the Dominica Island - [V33/F37 Hotel And Retail Building](https://manuelle-gautrand.com/projects/hospitality/mixed-use-building-2): V33/F37" - mixed-use building: hotel, restaurant & retail in Copenhagen This luxury programme groups a 5-star hotel, a restaurant, boutiques, leisure areas and fitness installations on an exceptional site on Fredericksbergaade, one of the best-known streets in Copenhagen. It comprises several lots which, taken together, enable the construction of a mixed scheme that includes new parts and restructuring – the whole inserted like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle into the tightly woven urban fabric of a lively midtown area. The project develops on the main front in vertical concertina-folds, which extend in looser folds as they move into the core of the block and to the rear. The folds assume the proportions of the old sloping roofs to be seen on all sides, and merge in with the existing roofs that will be kept. The street façade, with its close-fold pattern, seems to push back the walls that compress it on either side. Functions are laid out behind these protecting folds: shops at ground-floor level, restaurants opening to inner courts, hotel space on upper floors, leisure areas and fitness installations at the top, open to the sky. Materials are translucent: glass tinted pale gold, pearl grey and beige, to match the romantic lights and mists of Northern Europe. - [Food market](https://manuelle-gautrand.com/projects/leisure/food-market) - [Wine & food "village"](https://manuelle-gautrand.com/projects/leisure/wine-food-village) - [Phive – Library & Community Center](https://manuelle-gautrand.com/projects/leisure/civic-community-build): Council chambers, library, customer center, visitor experience center, community meeting rooms, aso. The existing building, built to designs by Roland Simounet, only dates back to 1983, but it is already on the Historic monuments list.In spite of this, rather than install the new parts at a distance, the architects chose to wrap the extension around a corner of the ‘old’ building. The project aims at reconstituting the museum as a continuous ensemble, this by adding new galleries to house a collection of Art Brut works in a travelling movement that extrapolates existing spaces. The architecture of the extension wraps around the north and east ends of the angular brick building in a double splay of long volumes that are fluid and organic. On one hand the new wing develops in narrow folds to contain a restaurant opening onto a central patio, on the other it extends in larger folds, each of which houses one of the five Art Brut galleries. Each fold opens at its extremity to a wide angle view onto parkland, varying the visit itinerary by moments of rest. Envelopes are sober, in plain untreated concrete, with profiles or perforations to protect large openings from too much direct sunlight. - [Gaite Lyrique](https://manuelle-gautrand.com/projects/leisure/gaite-lyrique): Conversion & refurbishment of the Gaite Lyrique theater in a center dedicated to digital arts and music in Paris. Photography by Vincent Fillon (c) and Philippe Ruault (c) Re-structuring an old theatre in the heart of Paris to turn it into an interactive platform for 21st century music and arts poses a number of difficult problems. To sum them up: the Manuelle Gautrand office had to conceive of a place that could cater to all the artistic activities of today, a place open to public visits but that was also a working studio where artists could actually create, produce and present. The design priorities are clear: create three main production facilities, three spaces for live shows. Around these three anchor points unfold a continuum of fluid and mobile ‘breathing’ spaces to serve alternately as work studios and presentation spaces: sets for the digital arts and modern music, for performers and for the public. They include library, exhibition areas, foyers, café, bookshop, rehearsal studios, etc… To animate these fluctuations of program and accompany the many changes in spatial layout, mobile ‘guide’ modules, called «eclaireuses» are provided. Mounted on rollers, these container-size units move from place to place, creating a changing scenography. Also assisting the public in its movements is a long dodecahedra furniture ‘ribbon’ that threads the entire layout: welcoming, accompanying, and providing rest. - [Louis Vuitton Maison](https://manuelle-gautrand.com/projects/leisure/louis-vuitton-maison): Retail space, cafe, exhibition space in Seoul - [Munch Museum](https://manuelle-gautrand.com/projects/leisure/munch-museum): Munch Museum in Oslo Our objective is to propose a very emblematic project, which can be powerful enough to project the town of Oslo into the unique Edward Munch’s city, and which can be generous with all the inhabitants and the public. The shape of the project takes its roots in curves, like Edward Munch paintings. But also like the Norway Mountains, and like the fjords. There is a triangular grid, on which emerge curves designing all the peaks of the projects, with a progression in the direction of the sea: More the project goes south to the sea, more the peaks are decreasing, becoming slopes and conches for all the outdoor spaces, where you can be protected from the winds and directly in the orientation of the sun. The curves are also always created to emphasize the program: To create wonderful ceilings to the Munch collections, to give a lot of sloping facade searching the sun and the maximum of light for the housings and the other programs, to welcome in a generous way the arrival of the cable car line, to protect from the winds a lot of terraces and open spaces, …Each curve is a story dedicated to a specific goal of each program. The location of Munch Museum itself is quite in the middle of the project, really irradiating and enchanting the whole site, like a heart. The interior spaces are sometimes sculpted by the shape of the curved roof, for example in the exhibition places, to give smooth impresses, like if the interiors were draped with white and partly translucent ceilings. The goal is to exhibit the Munch Paintings in a calm atmosphere, with appeasement and calmness. - [Arsenal Exhibition](https://manuelle-gautrand.com/projects/leisure/arsenal-exhibition): Pavillon de l'Arsenal: exhibition scenography "The Invention of the European Tower'' in Paris - [Citroen Showroom](https://manuelle-gautrand.com/projects/leisure/citroen-showroom): C42: Citroen flagship showroom, avenue des Champs-Elysees in Paris The automobile manufacturer Citroën wanted their new flagship showroom on the Champs-Elysées to be really ambitious. So we developed a concept that would magnify their cars in a building with strong symbolic presence, a kind of corporate totem composed of eight vehicles stacked on platter one on top of the other. The arrangement forms a gigantic upright display around which visitors move in an ascending/descending spiral movement via flights of stairs and landings. At the top, the sculptural erection opens superb views up and down the avenue, over the city and across the nearby gardens and river. The cars are displayed on revolving circular platforms under a faceted mirror-ceiling that fragments and multiplies their lines and details. Besides enhancing the presence of the display models, the effect accentuates the vertical reality of space and creates an exhilarating sense of lightness. Around this scenography, the skin is all in faceted glass and plays on the distinctive shape of the Citroën logo: the chevron. At street level on the Champs-Elysées, the façade begins as a simple flat curtain wall. The double chevron soon appears proliferating as it rises in free and inventive array right up to the summit. The glass front unfolds a gigantic origami, colored by diaphanous white and red film that lets subdued clear light into the interior. - [Conservatory](https://manuelle-gautrand.com/projects/leisure/conservatory-2): National Conservatory of Franche-Compté Region and FRACin Besancon The Cité des Arts proposal for Besançon groups a FRAC (Regional Fund for Contemporary Art) and a CNR (Conservatoire of Music), beside the river Doubs. Its site lies between two bastion towers that are vestiges of 17th century fortifications built by Vauban. The programme concerns a range of different spaces, more or less open to the public, laid out flat. In the central part, a continuum of open spaces forms a link between the city centre and the riverside. Its form evolves from that of a forecourt to a huge foyer, enabling direct access to the FRAC, the CNR, an open air cloister for live shows, and a terrace restaurant laid out in an old industrial building. Façades are cut away to reveal the activities inside, and in some places sight lines cross the entire set. The roofs of the new facility have a crystalline look; their angles derive as much from Vauban’s military architecture as from the rocky spurs that rise over the city, the old parts of which are built of the same Chailluz stone. They create an artificial contemporary ridge line perceptible from many different vantage points, in particular the citadel. By night, glazed skylights illuminate this huge crystalline sculpture. - [Contemporary Art Fondation](https://manuelle-gautrand.com/projects/leisure/contemporary-art-fondation): Francois Pinault Foundation for Contemporary Art on Seguin island in Boulogne This project was designed for a high-profile location: the downstream tip of the Ile Seguin, an island in the Seine. The architects wanted to modify its contours using floor plans in trapezoid form to re-shape the shoreline in both plan and elevation. Instead of a sharp prow, the project develops in broad volumes like the stern of a ship. The programme is housed in these four horizontal volumes, sitting on a strong mineral base. Inside, there are two types of space. First, the exhibition spaces, which are like variations on a musical theme: visitors discover rooms whose size varies according to the number of works they contain; they are highly flexible and can combine and interact with other spaces. The second, the breathing spaces, which make the visit satisfying and complete. They are the essential intervals that both unite and separate: places for resting, for enjoying the visit experience, or for preparing a change of direction. All four levels are wrapped in a shimmering skin that covers façades, roof and folds. They are set one on top of the other in stepped array, so that each has an outdoor court – terraces that open magnificent views of Paris. - [Cultural Complex](https://manuelle-gautrand.com/projects/leisure/cultural-complex): "La coupole" cultural complex auditorium 550 seats & three cinema theaters in Saint-Louis I designed the program with three buildings, with three gauged forms, structure and materials which were different. Each one had to create a dialogue and a link with an own and different context. Everything is stitched (cousu) together, smoothly with its own distinctive character. The new building catalyze urban life through a powerful and instantly identifiable landmark rising up like a metaphor. The first piece is the auditorium, in the main position in the middle of the space, and on each side, there are the other pieces of the program: The cinemas in one side, and the multi-purpose space in the other side, which is in the middle of the main square in Saint-Louis. The surfaces and material embody the different weighs and functions. The sheer size of the auditorium, in brown concrete, is filtered through a “shell” (cage) made of slightly screen metal, whose gentle twinkling hides away the utilities. The auditorium interiors is all in red, only red, to create a very strong impression, when the public arrives inside the theater-hall. In the foyer-café and the waiting spaces the colors are also very bright, to give a lot of impressions, a lot of gaiety. Some of the facades are in rusted metal which is now orange, some others are in brown polycarbonate, or in glazed concrete, which the color is “chocolate brown”. ## Studio - [About](https://manuelle-gautrand.com/about) - [Media](https://manuelle-gautrand.com/media) - [Contact](https://manuelle-gautrand.com/contact)
